A Flanagan High School senior died on Friday after a motor vehicle accident. Ryan Smith, 18, was four days away from graduating when he and a friend went to pick up their caps and gowns at the high school. The car they were in spun out of control and hit a tree. The two South Florida car crash victims were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida.
Though the Broward County School district and police refused to confirm the name of the deceased, because the accident is still under investigation, students at the school were opening mourning the loss of their classmate and friend. Smith had planned to attend Lake-Sumter Community College in Central Florida, where he received a baseball scholarship.
This marks the second Broward County auto accident to claim the life of a graduating senior this week. A senior at McFatter Technical High School died last Monday night following a car accident in Miramar. These two recent accidents underscore the tragic fact that traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teens in the US.
