In Kendall, a car accident that occurred just after 1:30am Sunday morning claimed the life of a 24-year-old driver and injured three others. The car accident victim reportedly sped up behind a car on Florida’s Turnpike just before her vehicle hit the car in front of her.

Both cars spun out of control and hit the guardrail, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. In Ormond Beach, six motorcycle officers who were escorting relatives of a motorcycle crash victim to the funeral got into an accident of their own when the lead rider reportedly slowed down and the other riders did not, resulting in a chain-reaction collision. According to authorities, two officers were hurt but their injuries were not serious. The impact on the motorcycles was minor.

The motorcycle accident occurred last Tuesday in conjunction with Bruce Rossmeyer’s funeral. Rossmeyer, 66, died in a motorcycle crash in Wyoming the previous week during an annual trip with friends. He was the owner of 15 Harley-Davidson dealerships, many of them in Florida.

Rossmeyer’s family issued a statement on July 31 thanking the community for its outpouring of support in the wake of the motorcycle mogul’s death.

Over the weekend, three accidents in Florida’s Okaloosa County resulted in two deaths and six injuries. The first car accident happened on Friday just before midnight when a driver turned left in front of another vehicle. The 49-year-old woman behind the wheel was killed, while the other driver was seriously injured. The third auto accident occurred on Saturday at 10:30pm when a pedestrian walked into the path of an oncoming car near Beasley Park. The 58-year-old man died after being hit by two vehicles. Neither driver is thought to been under the influence of alcohol, but the toxicology report is still pending for the man who died. According to a report recently released by the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida drivers are more likely to get into a car accident in Jacksonville than anywhere else in the state. With a total of 14,000 crashes last year, Jacksonville topped the list of Florida auto accidents in 2008, beating Miami by roughly 50 percent.

Another reported released from the 2009 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test showed that Florida ranks 43rd in the country based on driver’s exam scores. Florida drivers averaged a 74.1%.

Despite this data, there were fewer Florida motor vehicle crashes last year compared to 2007. The number of fatalities fell below 3,000 for the first time in eight years. Pedestrian fatalities fell about 5%, while injuries climbed more than 4%. The data shows that Pedestrians were less likely to be killed in a car accident, but they were more likely to be hit and injured.

On Sunday afternoon, an auto accident on Alligator Alley sent three people to the hospital. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two of the injured were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital via MedFlight helicopter, while another was taken to NCH Downtown Naples Hospital via ground transport. No fatalities have been reported.

Emergency responders received a call about the motor vehicle crash just after 5pm on Sunday. Another 911 call indicated that there was an accident at the 76 mile market, but that call may have been a second report of the accident at the 84 mile marker.

Both lanes of northbound Interstate 75 were shut down as medics worked at the scene of the accident. Police are still uncertain on how many vehicles were involved in the traffic accident. An initial scanner indicated four, but only two vehicles had been towed from the scene as of Sunday evening.

In Miami, a 10-year-old boy from Jacksonville was seriously injured last month after being hit by a truck near the Seven Mile Bridge. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that the boy was airlifted to Miami Children’s Hospital.

A FHP spokesperson indicated that the boy may have run into traffic while he and his family were attempting to cross the highway to Knights Key campground on a fishing outing. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the truck accident.

Since the truck crash that injured the 10-year-old, the family has been staying in a Miami apartment. He remains in critical condition at Miami Children’s Hospital, but friends say is making progress and may be able to return home to Jacksonville in a few weeks. In addition to the broken bones the boy suffered during the accident, he also contracted Swine Flu and suffered kidney failure.
